From side-hustle to a million dollars, Josh Culler sat with me to talk about the ups and downs of being a creative business owner. We boiled the convo down to three key tips for scaling a creative agency!
1. Build Authentic Relationships
We’ve heard it time and time again, relationships are the foundation of any successful business. It’s no different for Josh who regularly puts himself in rooms with others who have “been there, done that”. If you feel like a fish-out-of-water, then you’re probably doing something right.
2. Audit Prospective Clients
Anybody who has run a service-based business knows that bringing on the wrong clients can be disastrous and time-consuming. Josh channels his inner Sherlock when interviewing new clients. What is Josh looking for? Two words, ‘Hustle’ and ‘Grind’. If potential clients are using those terms within a specific context then Josh must move on. Hustle and Grind clients will text you at 10am on a Saturday, is that what you want?
“Hustle is a season, not a lifestyle.”
3. Live in the Content
Consume, consume, consume. The key to running and scaling a successful creative agency is to eat, sleep and breathe content. Trends and styles come and go each and every day – to stay on top of the shifts can be challenging but Josh believes that’s what sets successful creators apart from struggling creatives.
And let’s be real, it’s cute and romantic to joke about being a “starving artist” but I think we’d all rather be “successful” artists.
